As the parent of the bride or groom, you have a wonderful role in your child's big day. But you also need to navigate the sometimes tricky waters of looking and feeling great while ensuring you don't take attention away from where it should be. Your choice of jewelry can either help or hinder this effort.

How can you ensure you make the right choices? Here are a few dos and don'ts for anyone on any budget.

1. Do Look to the Theme

Your wedding jewelry should reflect your style and personality, but it should also blend in with the theme of the wedding. To begin with, look for jewelry that meshes with the wedding colors. Most parents of the bride or groom choose clothing that blends - but doesn't exactly match - the wedding colors, so coordinating jewelry should be relatively simple.

Second, avoid jewelry that clashes with the theme or style of the wedding. If your child is hosting a beach wedding, look for a necklace or earrings with an organic, casual vibe to them. A heavy, formal, or geometric piece of jewelry may not fit in well and could accidentally draw the wrong type of attention.

2. Don't Over-Accessorize

One cardinal rule for parents of a bride or groom is not to overshadow the actual bride or groom. This is their day, after all, and they should be the stars and centers of attention. So avoid going in heavy on accessories. You may not want to wear dramatic earrings, a large necklace, or stacks of necklaces, bracelets, rings, and a fancy hair ornament at the same time.

Keep it low-key but beautiful by choosing just one or two of these items instead. If you're not sure if something is too much, ask a trusted friend to provide an impartial opinion.

3. Do Use a Statement When Needed

One exception to avoiding making a display of your accessories is when you have an outfit that needs something to make it pop.

A dress or suit that is particularly simple might benefit from a single statement piece of jewelry, such as a large and eclectic necklace to dress up a monotone or color-blocked neckline. This statement should usually be limited to one physical location. And there should be nothing that vies for attention with it.

4. Don't Match Too Well

Another way to unwittingly draw attention from the bride or groom is to match too closely with them or their wedding party. If the bridesmaids all wear a particular statement necklace or hairpiece, don't buy yourself one as well. This muddles the message made by unifying the wedding party and distinguishing them from the crowd. And certainly, avoid jewelry that looks too much like anything on the wedding couple.

5. Do Wear Something Sentimental

Wedding days are all about family, love, the merging of lives, and good friends. So a great addition to your jewelry is something that has a sentimental nature.

It could be a piece of heirloom jewelry like your own mother's ring or necklace. But it doesn't need to be old. You might pick out a pendant that reminds you of your child when they were young. Or buy a charm bracelet that highlights their journey to adulthood and then give it to them as a wedding gift. Whatever sentimental statement you choose, it will make you look and feel wonderful due to the love put into it.
