What do you need to know about wedding rings for men? The bride's bling gets more than its fair share of attention, but what about the groom's ring? If you're not sure where to start your search, take a look at answers to some of the top men's wedding ring questions.

Who Should Choose the Groom's Ring?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The person who proposes typically buys the engagement ring. But wedding bands are a different story. Traditionally, the bride is responsible for the groom's ring. But even though that's tradition, some contemporary couples may view this arrangement as old-fashioned.

Also, the notion of the bride selecting the groom's ring assumes all marriages are between a man and a woman. If you're not sure who should choose the groom's ring, consider:

  • Your personal couple preferences. How do you feel (as a couple) about this choice? There's no rule saying you have to follow a specific guideline or recommendation. Make your own wedding ring shopping rules and work together to decide who should choose the man's band.
  • Your ring style. Do you want both wedding rings to match? If you want to coordinate bands, you need to shop for or design rings together as a couple.
  • Your finances. How will you pay for the groom's ring? If you've already combined bank accounts, this isn't a major issue. But if you have separate accounts or credit cards, discuss the financial aspects of this purchase.

While this is a couple's purchase, the groom is the one who will wear the ring. This means he needs to feel comfortable with both the design and his ability to effectively communicate his preferences to his soon-to-be spouse.

What Types of Metals Are Available for Men's Rings?

Men's wedding bands may differ in design from women's rings, but there are similarities between the two types of jewelry. Like women's wedding rings, men's styles are made from:

  • Yellow gold. This classic color is a traditional pick that has a timeless flare. A pure 24-karat yellow gold is soft and easily scratched. If you prefer this type of metal, but want a highly durable ring, consider a lower karat gold alloy.
  • White gold. Gold wedding rings don't always have the traditional yellow tone. White gold has a silver, contemporary look.
  • Rose gold. While you might think of this pink tone gold as part of a bride's ring, rose gold is gaining popularity with everyone. This choice has a standout style with a modern touch.
  • Platinum. Platinum looks like white gold - but has a superior level of durability. If the groom has concerns about scratches or other types of daily wear damage, platinum is an ideal choice.
  • Palladium. This metal has a white-silver sheen like white gold or platinum. Palladium isn't as durable, or expensive, as platinum.
  • Silver. Sterling silver is another contemporary option for men. Pure silver isn't durable. If you want to explore this option, ask about an alloy.
  • Titanium. This durable, light-weight metal is a popular choice for active men or anyone who wants to avoid unnecessary ring damage.

The metal you choose depends on several factors. These include your personal preference, the overall design of the ring, durability and wear issues, and whether you want the metal to match your spouse's ring.

Should a Man's Ring Include Gemstones?

A traditional man's wedding band is diamond- or gemstone-free. While your dad's or grandfather's band was only made from plain metal, today's men's rings may also include some extras. A channel type of setting with smaller diamonds or rows of gems adds an extra touch to this special ring. If you're not sure whether to add diamonds or not, discuss the options with a custom jewelry creator.

A groom should always get a ring that he likes, whether it's traditional or not. If you're ready to buy your wedding ring, contact Staples Jewelry for more information.
